Disease description:

I’ve been undergoing cycloplegia (pupil dilation) all along. Some people told me this is very serious—dry eye syndrome will develop later, and I might even go blind. Can cycloplegia cause dry eye syndrome?

Mydriasis does not cause dry eye syndrome. This condition causes minimal harm to the eyes and is primarily characterized by symptoms such as dryness and conjunctival injection. The active ingredients of medications used to treat this condition may drain via the nasolacrimal duct into the nasal cavity, potentially leading to facial flushing, tachypnea, and altered mental status; therefore, prompt treatment is essential. Patients may experience transient visual blurring, which is a normal and expected phenomenon—vision typically returns to baseline within three days.
