Trachoma presents with symptoms such as a foreign-body sensation, tearing, and conjunctival hyperemia. The eyes may feel extremely uncomfortable—particularly gritty and itchy—and small granules may be visible on the inner surface of the eyelids upon eversion; the conjunctiva appears markedly reddened and congested. Patients may also experience photophobia, excessive tearing, a pronounced foreign-body sensation, and purulent discharge. Conjunctival hyperemia is typically prominent, and numerous follicles may appear on the tarsal conjunctiva.
