Proctitis requires symptomatic treatment. If it is caused by a bacterial infection, the specific causative pathogen must first be identified, followed by targeted therapy—typically with antibiotics to reduce inflammation. However, prior to initiating antibiotic therapy, bacterial culture and antimicrobial susceptibility testing are essential to prevent adverse reactions. In cases where proctitis represents a localized form of ulcerative colitis, oral medications are required, along with topical therapy (e.g., rectal enemas or suppositories). Treatment duration tends to be relatively prolonged, and regular follow-up examinations are necessary to monitor disease progression and adjust the therapeutic regimen accordingly.
