Hello, advanced-stage renal cell carcinoma (RCC) refers to cancer that has metastasized systemically—for example, to the lungs, bones, brain, or even the hematologic system. Patients with such widely metastatic disease typically have a very poor prognosis, with survival generally not exceeding six months. If metastasis is newly detected and limited to the lungs, targeted therapy may still be an option. However, once widespread metastases are present throughout the body, targeted therapy is no longer effective, and treatment shifts exclusively to palliative (symptom-directed) care. Patients, their families, and physicians should maintain confidence in palliative management. A positive, optimistic, and resilient attitude may modestly extend survival—though it still rarely exceeds one year.
Advanced RCC commonly causes symptoms such as significant weight loss, profound fatigue, and diminished mental alertness. Surgical intervention may be considered as part of the treatment plan, but patients should avoid spicy foods during therapy.
