What factors can cause elevated cortisol levels?
Disease description:
After today's examination, I found that my cortisol level has increased. What could be the reasons for this phenomenon?
Elevated cortisol levels may result from long-term and excessive use of supraphysiological doses of glucocorticoid medications, leading to iatrogenic hypercortisolism. It may also be caused by excessive secretion of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) from the pituitary gland, commonly seen in conditions such as pituitary tumors or hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction. Additionally, cortisol overproduction can be due to tumors originating in the adrenal glands themselves, resulting in excess cortisol secretion.
