Disease description:

Since last month, I have frequently felt numbness in both legs, and the lower back pain has also become quite noticeable. The doctor said this is due to a herniated lumbar disc. What are the causes of a herniated lumbar disc?

Lumbar disc herniation is generally caused by excessive load on the lumbar spine. For example, prolonged engagement in heavy physical labor without timely rest can increase pressure within the intervertebral discs, exceeding the tolerance of the annulus fibrosus and leading to its degeneration. It may also result from suddenly lifting heavy objects or sustaining a sprain or strain injury to the lower back during exercise. Additionally, this condition can be related to genetic factors, although such cases are relatively rare.
