Generally, pregnancy test strips yield the most accurate results about one week after a missed period. Pregnancy test strips determine whether a woman is pregnant by detecting the level of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) hormone in urine. Only after the fertilized egg has implanted in the uterus can hCG be detected in the blood. As pregnancy progresses, the concentration of hCG in urine gradually increases, making the test results more accurate.
