Can patients with lupus nephritis due to systemic lupus erythematosus eat abalone?
Disease description:
Hello, I'm 32 years old and have been diagnosed with lupus nephritis. Recently, I've been craving abalone and would like to know whether it's safe for someone with lupus nephritis to eat abalone.
Patients with lupus nephritis should not eat abalone. Abalone is high in protein. Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) nephritis are advised to follow a low-protein, low-salt diet, emphasizing light, easily digestible, and metabolizable foods. They should drink plenty of water and consume more vegetables and fruits rich in vitamins. Skin rashes in SLE nephritis patients are photosensitive; therefore, foods with strong photosensitizing effects—such as coriander, celery, figs, and pineapple—may trigger or worsen rashes and should be avoided as much as possible.
