Can patients with lupus nephritis eat red beans?
Disease description:
My mom cooked a pot of red bean porridge today at noon, but my grandmother has lupus nephritis. May she eat it?
Lupus nephritis patients are generally advised not to eat red beans. Their diet should primarily consist of high-quality, low-protein foods. Although red beans are relatively high in protein, they contain plant-based protein, which is not considered high-quality because the amino acids they contain are not all essential amino acids required by the human body. Excessive consumption may increase the excretory burden on the kidneys and hinder disease recovery. Additionally, red beans contain a relatively high amount of potassium ions, which may disrupt electrolyte metabolism and lead to hyperkalemia.
