What does it mean to see small nodular calcification foci within the prostate?
Disease description:
Recently, I haven't been feeling well and went to the hospital for a checkup. The diagnosis showed small nodular calcifications in the prostate. What does this mean?
Small nodular calcifications within the prostate are caused by abnormal deposition of calcium salts in the prostatic glands and ducts. Common causes include chronic prostatitis, as well as nodular hyperplastic glandular tissue compressing and obstructing the prostatic ducts in cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia, leading to impaired drainage and subsequent calcium deposition. These calcifications are typically detected incidentally during prostate ultrasound or CT imaging. Generally, prostate calcifications themselves do not require treatment; however, underlying conditions such as chronic prostatitis or benign prostatic hyperplasia may be treated accordingly.
