Aspartate aminotransferase is a common liver function test. This substance is primarily found in the liver, heart muscle, and other human tissues, where it assists liver cells in metabolic processes. Elevated levels of aspartate aminotransferase indicate chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, bile duct obstruction, or other liver diseases. Such enzyme elevation can also occur in diseases affecting the liver and biliary tract.
