What are the risks of coffee enema detoxification?
Disease description:
There's been a recent medical awareness campaign near my neighborhood about digestive health. I happened to walk by and heard something about "coffee enemas," which I'd never heard of before—I suspect it might just be some gimmick by unscrupulous vendors. So I'm wondering, what are the potential risks or harms of using coffee enemas for detoxification?
It may lead to harms such as intestinal perforation, disrupted bowel habits, and infections. The main mechanism is that the acidity of coffee stimulates the intestinal wall, promotes intestinal motility, and helps expel accumulated feces and toxins from the body, thus achieving a colon-cleansing effect. However, long-term or inappropriate enemas may also cause disturbances in water and electrolyte balance. When coffee is introduced into the intestine, what comes out is not only the coffee and waste but also essential inorganic salts and water that should normally be absorbed by the body. The intestinal wall is very thin; if self-administered enema procedures are performed improperly or excessive force is applied, it may accidentally puncture the intestinal wall, leading to intestinal perforation. Once perforation occurs, intestinal contents and bacteria can leak into the abdominal cavity, causing infection.
