Why do infants develop iron deficiency anemia?
Disease description:
My friend's baby is one year old and has iron-deficiency anemia. The baby's weight is significantly lower compared to peers, and there are occasional episodes of diarrhea. Why do infants develop iron-deficiency anemia?
Iron deficiency anemia in infants can result from inadequate iron intake or chronic diarrhea. When dietary intake is insufficient, infants can obtain iron from other sources. Animal-based foods are rich in iron and easily absorbed by children, such as pork liver, lean meat, and eggs. Iron-rich plant-based foods include legumes, sesame seeds, black fungus, kelp, and nori, which also provide readily absorbable iron.
