Disease description:

I've noticed I have an anal fissure, and the wound appears to be relatively fresh and not very severe. I don't want to go to the hospital for treatment—can a mild anal fissure heal on its own?

Anal fissures can heal on their own, especially when the wound is relatively fresh. Ensuring smooth bowel movements, eating a light diet, and avoiding spicy foods generally allow for spontaneous recovery. Developing good daily habits and taking preventive measures are important; topical treatment with Ma Ying Long hemorrhoid ointment and post-defecation herbal fumigation and sitz baths can be helpful. Chronic, long-standing anal fissures, however, are characterized by bleeding drops of blood, severe anal pain, and cyclical episodes with more serious symptoms. When the anal tear repeatedly reopens, the wound becomes chronic with scar tissue and induration, leading to ulcer formation that is difficult to heal, often requiring surgical intervention.
