What happens if a child is malnourished?
Disease description:
For the past six months, the baby's weight has not increased. I'm worried about malnutrition. What will happen if a child suffers from malnutrition?
Malnutrition is mostly caused by inadequate food intake and poor absorption. Prolonged malnutrition leads to physical wasting and decreased bodily functions. In severe cases, it results in weight loss, stunted growth, delayed development, and head and chest circumferences below normal values. Severe malnutrition also impairs immune function, increasing susceptibility to infections such as pneumonia, otitis media, and tuberculosis, and may cause damage to organ function.
