Proper early cooling treatment can reduce pain and local tissue swelling, promote vasoconstriction, decrease local bleeding and inflammatory response; however, inappropriate use may lead to opposite effects. Apply ice within 24 hours after injury, followed by heat application to facilitate resolution of inflammation. For patients with more severe closed injuries, topical ointments and sprays may be used for treatment.
