This condition is a manifestation of systemic arterial sclerosis. It results from lipid deposition and long-term hypertension, and while it is usually incurable, proactive interventions can prevent further progression. In severe cases, active treatment is required, starting with blood pressure control to prevent additional arterial damage, as well as quitting smoking and alcohol to avoid complications such as aortic dissection.
