Type 1 and type 2 diabetes can be initially assessed based on external characteristics. However, it is best to visit a hospital for testing, as the results will be more accurate and allow for better targeted treatment. The onset of type 1 diabetes is relatively rapid. Most patients are under 30 years old and exhibit obvious symptoms, such as ketoacidosis and ketonuria. They tend to be slim, and tests usually reveal decreased serum C-peptide levels. In contrast, most type 2 diabetes patients are obese and often have a family history of the disease; it is typically discovered during routine health checkups.
