Diabetic patients always have high blood glucose. Blood glucose is the sole criterion for diagnosing diabetes. A diagnosis of diabetes can be made when fasting blood glucose exceeds 7.0 mmol/L or postprandial (2-hour after meal) blood glucose exceeds 11.1 mmol/L. Patients are likely to be diagnosed with diabetes if their blood glucose is measured under conditions of fasting, rest, and absence of any illness. However, blood glucose levels may be higher than normal when patients are emotionally stressed, have not fasted for 8–10 hours, or are taking medications that elevate blood glucose.
