Precocious puberty refers to the early development of secondary sexual characteristics in children, meaning puberty begins earlier than usual. Generally, normal puberty starts gradually between the ages of 11 and 13. At this stage, girls begin breast development and boys experience an increase in testicular volume. In children with precocious puberty, the development of secondary sexual characteristics occurs earlier, typically around 8 to 9 years of age. Precocious puberty can negatively affect a child's height development. If signs of precocious puberty are detected, treatment with gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogs and growth hormones can be used to delay bone age, suppress development, and ultimately allow skeletal maturation to align with height.
