What happens if there is a uterine perforation?

Uterine perforation can cause bleeding. After procedures such as abortion, insertion or removal of an intrauterine device, or surgery, patients often experience significant abdominal pain; if blood vessels are damaged, there may be a tendency toward internal bleeding. Uterine perforation may affect adjacent organs and tissues, and if left untreated, can lead to complications such as acute pelvic inflammatory disease, tubal adhesions, cervicitis, and peritonitis. With appropriate repair, recovery can be excellent, ultimately returning to normal.
