Pregnant women should generally avoid gua sha. During the procedure, important local acupoints may be stimulated, which could cause discomfort to pregnant women. Gua sha may promote blood circulation and potentially increase the risk of uterine contractions, leading to fetal miscarriage. Additionally, since gua sha has a detoxifying effect, it may result in loss of essential nutrients. Prolonged use could lead to fetal malnutrition, as well as manifestations such as delayed growth and development and low birth weight.
