Early symptoms of esophageal cancer include a sensation of foreign body during swallowing. Initially, this feeling is more noticeable when eating dry or hard foods and tends to occur consistently at the same location. As the disease progresses, food may feel as though it is sticking after eating, with significantly slowed passage. Patients may also experience dull pain behind the breastbone, which typically does not occur continuously but becomes more apparent when eating quickly or when physically overexerted.
