Can pulmonary embolism in the elderly be cured?
Disease description:
My grandfather had orthopedic surgery a few days ago, and today he suddenly developed a pulmonary embolism. I would like to know whether pulmonary embolism in elderly patients can be cured.
Pulmonary embolism in the elderly is generally curable. If symptoms are mild, anticoagulant medications can be used under a doctor's guidance; commonly prescribed drugs include low molecular weight heparin and dabigatran. Thrombolytic agents such as tissue-type plasminogen activator or streptokinase may also be administered concurrently. For patients with severe symptoms, hospitalization for clot removal via interventional procedures or surgical operation is recommended.
