Can impacted wisdom teeth causing swelling and pain be extracted?
Disease description:
This morning, I woke up feeling some tooth pain. After going to the hospital, I found out that my wisdom tooth is swollen and painful. Can a swollen and painful wisdom tooth be extracted?
Wisdom tooth pain and swelling should not be immediately treated with extraction. Swelling and pain associated with wisdom teeth are usually caused by pericoronitis—an acute inflammatory condition. Around the wisdom tooth, there is often a deep periodontal pocket where inflammation can develop, leading to redness and swelling of the gums, resulting in acute pain. Additional symptoms may include limited mouth opening, painful swallowing, and headaches. Generally, it's recommended to first control the inflammation with anti-inflammatory treatment, and only proceed with extraction after the inflammation has completely subsided—this helps prevent recurrence. Oral medications such as nitroimidazole antibiotics or cephalosporin antibiotics can be used. In daily life, maintaining good oral hygiene is essential: brush teeth twice a day (morning and night) and rinse the mouth after meals.
