A red tongue coating is generally caused by excessive internal heat. Yin deficiency with hyperactivity of fire can lead to such heat, usually accompanied by symptoms like insomnia, dry mouth, and irritability. Patients should drink plenty of water and consume more cooling teas, such as chrysanthemum tea or green tea. Secondly, a red tongue may indicate blood stasis, in which case the tongue not only turns red but may also show reddish or purplish bruises. Patients are advised to increase physical activity and maintain a light, balanced diet.
