My grandfather was diagnosed with unstable angina. My mom said this condition might cause elevated cardiac enzymes. I'd like to ask, does unstable angina lead to increased cardiac enzymes?

Dr. Li Man
Unstable angina generally does not lead to elevated cardiac enzymes. Cardiac enzymes refer to a group of various enzymes present in the myocardium. When the myocardium is damaged, these enzymes can be released into the peripheral bloodstream, resulting in increased levels of cardiac enzymes in the blood. Elevated cardiac enzymes are associated with conditions such as myocarditis, acute myocardial infarction, and heart failure. However, clinically, unstable angina has not been found to cause an increase in cardiac enzymes.
