Disease description:

I always sleep with my mouth open at night. I looked it up online and saw it might be related to heart disease. Could you please tell me if sleeping with an open mouth is associated with heart disease?

Dr. Li Man
Sleeping with an open mouth is not necessarily related to heart disease. Although coronary atherosclerotic heart disease and other cardiac conditions may lead to heart failure during an episode, which could cause a patient to breathe through the mouth while sleeping, mouth breathing during sleep is not entirely caused by heart disease. It may also result from factors such as tonsillitis, long-established habits, or bronchial asthma.
