How should trachoma be treated when it occurs?
Disease description:
My eyes suddenly started hurting for no apparent reason, and there's been a constant discharge. After seeing a doctor, I was diagnosed with trachoma. Could you please advise on the best way to treat trachoma?
Trachoma is generally well treated with systemic and local medications. The main drugs used include rifampicin, phthalylsulfathiazole (PTH), and neomycin eye drops, along with erythromycin eye ointment applied at night. For acute or severe cases of trachoma, systemic antibiotic injections are required. If complications such as entropion occur, surgical correction is necessary. Trachoma is contagious to some extent; therefore, patients should be isolated during treatment and personal items must be disinfected promptly.
