Pregnant women should not undergo gua sha (scraping therapy). During the scraping process, abdominal contact may occur, potentially causing discomfort to the pregnant woman. Gua sha may promote blood circulation, but it also increases the risk of uterine contractions, which could lead to fetal miscarriage. Pregnant women are a particularly sensitive group and should not arbitrarily receive traditional Chinese medicine therapies, as these may fail to relieve bodily discomfort and could instead pose risks. Although gua sha is believed to have detoxifying effects, it may also result in the loss of essential nutrients.
