Does a boy with phimosis necessarily need circumcision?
Disease description:
My son has phimosis, but I'm hesitant to have him undergo surgery at such a young age. I'm really conflicted—does a boy with phimosis absolutely need to be circumcised?
Phimosis in boys does not necessarily require circumcision. Phimosis refers to a condition where the foreskin is too tight or has local adhesions, making the glans penis invisible, and it is commonly encountered in urology outpatient clinics. In young children under the age of 5, foreskin stretching may be performed to expose the glans and coronal sulcus; if successful, surgery is usually unnecessary. However, if the child is older and still has phimosis, circumcision is generally recommended.
