Early symptoms of cerebral palsy in children include delayed motor development, usually accompanied by reduced physical activity. Abnormal muscle tone is also common in the early stages; when muscle tone is low, children may assume a frog-like posture and may experience difficulty swallowing. Cerebral palsy in children may be caused by congenital factors, typically due to prenatal oxygen deprivation leading to damage of the central nervous system.
