How long after intracerebral hemorrhage can anticoagulation be initiated?
Disease description:
My uncle suddenly developed paralysis in all four limbs and was rushed to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with intracerebral hemorrhage. How long after a brain hemorrhage can anticoagulation therapy be resumed?
Anticoagulation is contraindicated during the acute phase of intracerebral hemorrhage, as anticoagulant medications may very likely exacerbate bleeding and lead to more severe complications. Generally, anticoagulation can be initiated about one week after the hemorrhage. This is because patients with intracerebral hemorrhage, who often remain bedridden for prolonged periods and lack physical activity, are at high risk of developing venous thromboembolism or pulmonary embolism; hence, anticoagulation is usually considered after one week.
