Chromosomal abnormalities in homologous chromosomes generally occur due to abnormal recombination and distribution of chromosomes during the formation of the zygote, caused by unknown factors. Chromosomal abnormalities refer to changes in chromosome number and structure. Normally, human cell nuclei contain 23 pairs (46 chromosomes total), including 22 pairs of autosomes and one pair of sex chromosomes. Chromosomes regulate individual organisms by directing protein synthesis.
