Which parts of the heart can be affected by rheumatic heart disease?
Disease description:
Recently, my grandmother hasn't been feeling well in her heart, and after an examination, she was diagnosed with rheumatic heart disease. I'm very worried about her health. Which parts of the heart can be affected by rheumatic heart disease?
Rheumatic heart disease can affect the heart valves, often involving one or more cardiac valves, and typically presents as valve narrowing. It may lead to valvular stenosis and can also cause valvular insufficiency, which may coexist. Usually, either valvuloplasty or valve replacement surgery is performed. Valve replacement is commonly chosen. Patients typically have the option of selecting either a biological or mechanical valve.
