How to treat trachoma
Disease description:
A child with trachoma will have sticky eye discharge and be sensitive to light. What methods are available to treat trachoma?
Trachoma can be treated with medication or surgery. Trachoma is a contagious eye disease caused by infection with Chlamydia trachomatis. Patients may experience symptoms such as photophobia, foreign body sensation, itchy eyes, and increased eye discharge. Under a doctor's guidance, topical antibiotics such as levofloxacin eye drops or erythromycin eye ointment can be used. In some cases, systemic antibiotics such as azithromycin or tetracycline may be necessary. If entropion develops in the late stage, surgical correction may be considered. For corneal opacity, corneal transplantation might be an option.
