Vocal cord polyps can undergo malignant transformation. If the duration of a vocal cord polyp is relatively short, continued observation may be appropriate. However, during treatment, it's important to minimize talking, speak softly, and allow the vocal cords maximum rest—some vocal cord polyps may resolve spontaneously. Precancerous lesions of the vocal cords can lead to cancer development; these precancerous conditions include symptoms such as leukoplakia of the vocal cords. If vocal cord leukoplakia or atypical hyperplasia occurs, prompt treatment is necessary, typically involving surgical removal.
