What causes vaginal itching?

There are various triggers for vulvar itching, the most common of which is wearing non-breathable underwear, keeping the genital area in a warm and moist environment for prolonged periods—creating favorable conditions for bacterial growth. Poor personal hygiene increases susceptibility to Candida albicans infection, leading to vulvovaginal candidiasis, one of the major causes of itching. More seriously, infection with Trichomonas vaginalis can result in trichomonas vaginitis, another common condition causing vulvar itching.
