Disease description:

I’ve been feeling a bit unwell these past two days. When I went to the pharmacy, I picked up two medications, both of which are to be taken on an empty stomach. I’d like to ask: Is it healthy to take medication on an empty stomach?

Hello, Some medications can be taken on an empty stomach because their pharmacological effects are optimized when administered before meals—or even require fasting to ensure proper absorption or action. Common examples include drugs that suppress gastric acid secretion, such as omeprazole, pantoprazole, and rabeprazole. Digestive enzyme supplements—such as digestive enzyme capsules and multienzyme tablets—are also typically taken on an empty stomach to enhance food digestion. Additionally, prokinetic agents (i.e., drugs that enhance gastric motility), such as domperidone and mosapride, are generally recommended to be taken before meals. I hope this information is helpful to you. Wishing you good health!
