What is the difference between oral rehydration and taking medication?
Disease description:
Does oral rehydration solution harm the body? Is oral rehydration faster-acting than taking medication?
The key difference between intravenous (IV) infusion and oral medication lies in the route by which the drug enters the body. IV infusion delivers drugs directly into the bloodstream via a vein, enabling rapid systemic distribution and therapeutic effect. In contrast, oral medications pass through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, where they are absorbed primarily across the gastric and intestinal mucosa before entering systemic circulation to exert their therapeutic effects.
IV administration allows drugs to reach target tissues more rapidly, effectively, and comprehensively, thereby achieving quicker therapeutic outcomes. However, IV drugs typically achieve higher plasma concentrations; therefore, for mild conditions, oral administration is generally preferred.
