Can fatty liver cause elevated ferritin levels?
Disease description:
My father has fatty liver disease. He had a medical checkup the other day, and the results showed high ferritin levels. I would like to know whether elevated ferritin is caused by fatty liver disease.
Fatty liver may lead to elevated ferritin levels, due to increased synthesis of ferritin in the body and reduced liver function causing decreased clearance of ferritin. However, other diseases can also cause high ferritin levels; therefore, more detailed diagnostic evaluation is recommended to determine the underlying cause. Patients should pay attention to their diet, reduce intake of high-fat foods, develop healthy eating habits, and quit smoking and alcohol consumption.
