Warning signs that a child may no longer grow taller include increasingly firm muscles, greater body curvature, the development of reproductive capability in both boys and girls, and the complete maturation of secondary sexual characteristics—all of which indicate that height growth has likely ceased. Additionally, if there is little or no noticeable height increase over a period of 1 to 2 years, it is advisable to visit a hospital for an X-ray examination of the epiphyseal plates to determine whether they have closed. Once the growth plates, especially those in the knee and hip joints, are fully closed, further height growth is essentially halted. Parents should provide children with foods rich in high-quality protein, calcium, phosphorus, and other essential nutrients to support bone development. Encouraging children to engage in jumping activities such as basketball and jump rope can stimulate bone growth. Appropriate outdoor exercise also helps children absorb vitamin D from sunlight, thereby enhancing calcium absorption.
