Infectious mononucleosis is a common disease caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), also known as glandular fever or "kissing disease." It primarily affects children and adolescents, although adults can also be infected. The main feature of this disease is a significant increase in monocytes—a type of white blood cell—in the bloodstream, accompanied by a range of typical clinical symptoms. Patients are advised to get adequate rest and avoid overexertion and strenuous physical activity. A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals is recommended to strengthen the immune system. Since EBV is mainly transmitted through saliva, patients should avoid sharing personal items such as utensils and drinking glasses during the illness, and minimize close contact such as kissing.
