What is Testosterone?
Recently feeling unwell, I went to the hospital for a checkup and found that my testosterone levels were high. Could you please explain what testosterone is?

Testosterone, chemically known as 17β-hydroxyandrost-4-en-3-one, is a sex hormone primarily produced by the testes in males and also in small amounts by the ovaries and adrenal glands in females. Testosterone plays a crucial role in males, being an important hormone for maintaining secondary sexual characteristics such as Adam's apple, beard, and pubic hair. It also significantly influences male sexual function, immune function, and bone health. In females, although testosterone levels are lower, it still plays a certain role in libido, muscle strength, and bone metabolism.
Testosterone is important not only for reproductive health but also for cardiovascular health, emotional stability, cognitive function, and overall metabolic status. For example, testosterone can increase bone density and reduce the risk of fractures; it can also improve mood and reduce the risk of depression and anxiety. Additionally, testosterone helps maintain healthy fat distribution and insulin sensitivity, thus preventing metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.
However, patients with abnormal testosterone levels should seek medical attention promptly.
