A friend went for a medical checkup, and the doctor said their hematocrit was low. I'd like to ask, what does it mean when hematocrit is low?

Hematocrit is an important indicator reflecting the status of red blood cells. A low hematocrit suggests possible anemia. In such cases, the diagnosis should be made by considering both the red blood cell count and hemoglobin levels. If all these parameters are decreased, this indicates that the patient has anemia, and the severity—mild, moderate, or severe—can be determined based on the hemoglobin level. Hemoglobin levels above 90 g/L are considered mild anemia, 60–90 g/L indicate moderate anemia, and below 60 g/L define severe anemia. Once the anemia is classified as mild, moderate, or severe, the classification further depends on the red blood cell volume, known as MCV.
