Persistently high intraocular pressure means glaucoma.
Disease description:
Recently, my intraocular pressure has been very high. A friend told me I might have glaucoma. Does persistently high eye pressure mean I have glaucoma?
Patients with high intraocular pressure are not necessarily suffering from glaucoma. Just as optic nerve damage can occur in normal-tension glaucoma, elevated eye pressure alone does not confirm glaucoma. Glaucoma is a group of diseases characterized by specific optic nerve damage and visual field loss. It is a neurodegenerative disorder, and high intraocular pressure is its greatest risk factor. Conceptually, glaucoma is not a single disease but rather a group of conditions encompassing many different diseases. Its main feature is optic nerve damage, which manifests both structurally and functionally. Therefore, it's essential to promptly visit a hospital for proper diagnosis of the underlying cause before initiating treatment.
