CPAP stands for continuous positive airway pressure, which delivers a continuous stream of pressurized air into the airway via a facial mask. The device that administers oxygen in this manner is called a CPAP ventilator. A CPAP ventilator helps maintain a certain pressure in the alveoli at the end of expiration, increases functional residual capacity, prevents alveolar collapse, and thereby improves ventilation and gas exchange functions.
