The causes of dacryoadenitis generally include metastatic infection, systemic infectious diseases, and low immunity. Metastatic infection is one of the common causes of dacryoadenitis, typically involving distant pyogenic lesions such as tonsillitis, pyelonephritis, and otitis media, which can spread via dissemination. If these infections reach the lacrimal glands, they may promote the development of dacryoadenitis. Systemic infectious diseases, such as scarlet fever, pneumonia, and Escherichia coli infection, can affect one lacrimal gland and lead to dacryoadenitis. When immunity is compromised, various tissues in the body become more susceptible to bacterial invasion; if the lacrimal gland tissue is affected, it may trigger dacryoadenitis.
