Is right back pain a sign of cholecystitis?
Disease description:
I have pain in my upper right back, and I'm particularly worried it might be caused by cholecystitis. Could right upper back pain be due to cholecystitis?
Some patients with cholecystitis may experience back pain, and in severe cases, referred pain radiating to the right shoulder or upper back. Cholecystitis is an inflammation caused by obstruction of the cystic duct and bacterial infection, leading to upper abdominal pain. Initially, patients may only feel discomfort or pain in the upper abdomen, which gradually progresses to paroxysmal colicky pain, often triggered by overeating or consuming greasy foods. Attacks are more common at night. In severe cases, distinct signs of peritonitis may appear, including tenderness, rebound tenderness, or radiating back pain, significantly affecting sleep and eating.
