Medications used to treat proctitis and rectal tenesmus include antibiotics, antiviral agents, and mesalazine. If proctitis is caused by a bacterial infection, oral cefixime can be administered for anti-infective treatment. For viral proctitis, antiviral drugs such as acyclovir may be used. In cases of ulcerative proctitis causing rectal tenesmus, mesalazine tablets can be taken orally along with mesalazine suppositories administered rectally to help stabilize the condition.
